inA common fat-phobic belief is that fat people are fat because they overeat. A recent submission to @facebooksexism perfectly illustrates this stereotype and the harmful classist attitudes it perpetuates:
Like most fat-phobic beliefs, this stereotype is completely wrong.
It is well accepted in public health science that food insecurity – which is the lack of consistent, dependable access to enough food for active, healthy living – predicts higher body weight.
Some reasons for this association include:
- Limited resources and lack of access to nutritious, affordable foods. Heavily processed, low-nutrition foods are usually cheaper, but are more calorie dense and less satisfying to eat.
- Cycles of food deprivation and overeating. Low income people often run out of money for necessities like food before their next paycheck arrives, resulting in extended periods of hunger and starvation followed by periods of compensatory eating when the paycheck arrives. Such eating patterns cause weight gain over time.
- High levels of stress, anxiety, & depression, all of which cause physiological changes resulting in weight gain over time.
- Limited access to health care. Many chronic health conditions, like polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid dysfunction, and type II diabetes, cause weight gain when left untreated.
All of this means that systematic oppression causes people to be fat for reasons that are outside of their personal control, and that poor fat people are not lying when they report that they cannot afford to put food on the table. Stop spreading the harmful, oppressive, and fat-phobic belief that you can
judge a person’s nutrition or eating habits by the size of their body.

READ THIS.
If you want to see how this translates, watch “a place at the table” it’s a documentary all about food insecurity and it touches on why a lot of Americans who suffer from this are over weight
Thanks for the great movie recommendation: A Place at the Table.
About The Film
50 Million Americans—1 in 4 children—don’t know where their next meal is coming from. A Place at the Table tells the powerful stories of three such Americans, who maintain their dignity even as they struggle just to eat. In a riveting journey that will change forever how you think about the hungry, A Place at the Table shows how the issue could be solved forever, once the American public decides—as they have in the past—that ending hunger is in the best interests of us all.
You can watch it on Netflix in Canada.

inWHATEVER YOU DO DON’T THINK ABOUT SHARON VERY SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING ‘WHAT WOULD PEGGY DO’ AS A LEGITIMATE TRAINING AND BATTLE STRATEGY AND SOMEHOW ALWAYS ENDING UP ASSAULTING A FELLOW BABY AGENT WITH THE NEAREST APPLIANCE DURING SPAR TRAINING
peggy carter taught sharon three things:
1. how to shove a man’s nasal bridge into his brain
2. how to run in heels
3. to never fucking apologize for eating whatever the fuck you want because sometimes you just need dessert and liquor in the middle of the nightfight me !!! SHARON IS PEGGY CARTER’S LEGACY AND THAT LEGACY IS A LETHAL HOT MESS WITH A FILTHY MOUTH AND A STERLING DISREGARD FOR RULES AND PROPRIETY
At one point it gets so bad that Fury has to call Sharon into his office.
Once the door’s closed he’s like “Look, you have injured enough people that I have to have a talk with you. The talk is this: you’re doing a good job and I’m almost a proud of you as your aunt will be when she hears you took down someone who claimed you were here because of nepotism. But you need to stop injuring them in ways that need medical treatment until you’re actually attacking people who aren’t on SHIELD insurance.”
It’s the same speech Peggy gave him years ago, and he’s proud to carry on the tradition.
@nyxetoile this is right out of your characterization book
Everyone thinks Sharon got into the Academy ‘cause she was Peggy’s grand-niece. No one realizes she almost DIDN’T get in because Peggy taught her how to fight like a scraped kneed street brawler with anger management problems and the instructors really didn’t know what to do with that.

inMy whole problem with the “I do makeup for ME! I’m EMPOWERED when I put on makeup!” discourse is that it completely erases the fact that women aren’t actually given the ability to MAKE that choice. It’s impossible to say that you’re doing it for self empowerment, or that “if it wasn’t so much fun I wouldn’t do it” because that’s just not true. Women who enjoy doing their makeup and women who don’t enjoy doing it both have equal pressure to wear makeup. Whether you enjoy the process or not, you will be taken less seriously as a woman, valued less, respected less, considered ‘unprofessional’ at work, etc. if you choose not to wear makeup. Men aren’t faced with the decision to get an extra hour of sleep or to be taken seriously. By writing it off as a cool empowering fun thing women do as an exciting entertaining hobby we’re just…. erasing the entire institution of makeup and of beauty standards that seriously harm women. If you enjoy doing makeup that’s great, that’s fine, and you should keep it up! But wearing makeup in the first place wasn’t ever your choice. We don’t GET a choice. I hate people saying “oh you don’t have to wear it! If you don’t like makeup don’t put it on!” As if I’m expected to just be cool with the way the world will treat me if I don’t conform to modern beauty standards! If you’re worrying about your eyebrows or lip plumpness or skin tone evenness that’s not you making a free willed cool decision to feel insecure and concerned about facial features that men never have to think twice about. That’s you thinking in a way you’ve been trained to think! And people wanna pretend that putting on makeup is Empowering… what the hell is empowering about making a choice that’s been forced on us since we were old enough to be seen as sexual objects lmfao… that’s bullshit that doesn’t empower me and having to give up valuable time and money and energy that men are never asked to give up makes me feel like shit!! It makes me miserable! It makes me dread every single morning because I know I’m gonna be putting forward all this bullshit labor just to exist and be taken seriously in my stupid body
