post was made in our family bible, the ONTD-STARTREK Livejournal. Many have wandered from home, myself included, but I wanted to share with everyone this fabulous page full of what May 2009 smelled like.
It smelled fucking awesome, people. Like apples. And bourbon. And party posts. And sweet sweet Vulcan tears, you know you cried when Spock cried. I made friends that summer that I still talk to EVERY FUCKING DAY and I can’t imagine not having these beautiful disasters in my life (the characters, not my friends they are not disastrous not really).
July 22nd. It smells so good already.
Goddamn. I hope this movie revives ONTD-ST. That was a wild, wild summer. And so much fucking fun.
I hope it revives ALL THE THINGS… including my fucking AWOL muses.
okay, but no publication details? Not even a name?
I believe this quote is from The Ring of Soshern by Jennifer Guttridge as it is regarded by many as the first k/s fic, though as slash was originally only distributed privately there is no way to be sure which was actually the first.
Unfortunately, Jennifer passed away in 2004 and the site hosting her works has since been taken down so I’ve never gotten a chance to read her writing. She was by all accounts a wonderful woman and deserves to be remembered for her contributions to the community
No, it’s not from Soshern—it’s “A Fragment out of Time” by Diane Marchant, which was published in 1974 in an “adult”/R-rated (but still incredibly tame) fanzine called Grup, issue #3. [Thanks to museaway & fanlore.org for keeping track of such things. Like, seriously: bless.] You can also see the K/S art which was printed along with the (pronoun-vague) story, here and here.
Unsurprisngly, there was backlash to the ficlet; Marchant responded with a meta about her own story in the next issue of Grup: “Pandora’s Box…Again” (subtitled “A Psychological Discussion of the Relationship Between Captain James T. Kirk and Conmander Spock"). Still many gen ST fans and writers didn’t buy into what was, at the time, just called “the premise”; Connie Faddis, writing for The Halkan Council #12, dismissed it thusly: “Diane Marchant wrote an article on the Kirk/Spock homosexual love affair premise that’s been buzzing around fannish conversations for at least a year. The idea is an interesting permutation, but Diane’s argument fails to convince because she failed to document her evidence thoroughly, and there’s a tone of ‘dirty old broad getting her rocks off, heh heh’ that distracts from the argument and debases the premise.” Ah, slash haters. La plus ça change, la plus ça même.
Nonetheless, Marchant, who passed away in 2006, was a very highly regarded fan who founded and ran a fanclub in Australia, and even received an audio letter from the great bird of the galaxy himself, congratulating her on a special award (not sure from whom?), regretting he can’t be there in person (after which he goes on as usual for quite some time about the importance of the space program, the arms race, social justice/tolerance, etc., as well as passing on to her “a message from Majel…who considers herself a special friend of hers” and letting her know “we’re going to do a new movie, Star Trek III…and whether the movie has this title, part of the theme will certainly be “The Search for Mr. Spock"…none of us are going to let Spock retreat into death so easily”).

A longtime fan of science fiction, Fuller began his career writing for Star Trek: Voyager (1997-2001) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1997).
“My very first experience of ‘Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the ‘Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire,” said Fuller. “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of ‘Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no ‘Star Trek’ series has gone before.”
The new series is set to bow on CBS in January 2017, then move to CBS’ All Access digital subscription service. It will be the first original series to launch on a broadcast network but air primarily on an SVOD service.
Me when talking to somebody who doesn’t watch star trek: Idk it feels nicer than other space stuff like it’s a reminder that it’s not all death and destruction. There’s hope for us, as a race and as individuals.
Me when talking to other Trekkies: lmao so my fave ep is between unicorn dog and tribbles
Leonard Nimoy, who played the most famous TV scientist of all time, Mr. Spock, came from an arts and theater background and in real life is nothing like his character. Yet he told me that because Mr. Spock and “Star Trek” have inspired so many young viewers to become scientists, researchers who meet him are always desperate to give him lab tours and explain the projects they’re pursuing in peer-to-peer terms. Mr. Nimoy nods sagely and intones to each one, ‘Well, it certainly looks like you’re headed in the right direction.’
